"Duwayne Brooks was Stephen Lawrence’s best friend, and was with him on the night he was murdered. Duwayne kindly agreed to give me an interview for this blog, in which he talks about his reaction to the conviction of two men for the murder of Stephen Lawrence.
Our students have been fascinated and appalled by the case, which took place just a few miles from our school, and so we’ve used a range of video resources to promote awareness and discussion about it, and the role of the police and the media.
Here are some links to the videos and resources we have found most useful. Feel free to show your students this video of Duwayne’s interview – it’s just a rough cut right now – but I wanted to get it out there for people to use. Get in touch if you have any trouble playing it."

Your Justice Your World is a comprehensive educational resource to help young people from 7 to 16 understand the justice system. It has been mapped very closely to the latest Citizenship and PSHE curricula, and extensive support for teachers is provided throughout.
The activities in both the 7–11s and the 11–16s sections of the site are situated in a fictitious but realistic UK town, Crownford Rise. The town is populated by a cast of characters who all have dealings with the law as part of their daily lives.
Students interact with their stories and are invited to consider the dilemmas, discuss the issues and voice their opinions on a range of situations covering aspects of criminal, civil and family law.
There are four units:
1. What are laws for?
2. Making the law work
3. In court
4. What's in a sentence?

This book is a valuable source of information for young people. It
explains, as simply as possible, those parts of the law that have most relevance to the everyday life of young people in England and Wales.
[ACT staff learned some useful facts and handy tips from it too.]

The resource from the Citizenship Foundation aims to enable young people with special educational needs to understand and critically engage with the criminal legal system, specifically the workings of youth courts.
The resources centre around the story of Danny, a 15 year old boy who is charged with a crime.
Students complete activities based around the events that take place during this story, which culminates in a classroom based mock trial and sentencing activity.

A host of resources for teachers and pupils to help set up a really effective school council. Involver helps ensure that you don't just talk about improving the school toilets, but that the school council is an effective and active part of decision making in the school.
The site includes student voice audit kits for your school and info about training for pupils and teachers.

On 27 January 2012, we are asking you to consider what you see and hear around you, and to use your voices to Speak Up against hatred and discrimination.
You can make your voice heard by taking inspiration from the past to create a safer, better future.

Barack H. Obama became president of the United States barely 50 years after the last governmental impediments were removed preventing black people from voting in his country.
Think about the role of campaigning in changing society. Martin Luther King was part of a revolutionary campaign in the USA. 15th January is a national holiday in the USA so use this opportunity to teach about rights, democracy and identities.
Link historic campaigns to current day campaigns and GCSE campaigns.
Here ACT suggests some angles to take and some resources to use.
